How the stone is finished

Filmed on our own unit at Amarpura. This complete process shows how we combine cutters, abrasives and diamond tools to create different stone finishes through multiple finishing stages.

Complete process

One line, multiple processes and finishes

This full process video shows the way we make and finish Kota stone at our unit. The work combines cutters, abrasives and diamond tools rather than relying on one operation alone.

Different stages can be mixed to suit the required result: natural and sawn faces, honed surfaces, diamond polish, table polish, high polish and other specified finishes. Water-fed cutting and polishing help control heat, carry away stone slurry and keep the face consistent.

Calibration with the line polisher

Calibration brings the stone to a controlled, even thickness before the final surface finish. This water-fed line polisher works across the face while the stone moves through the machine.

It is one part of the wider process: cutters, calibration, abrasives and diamond tools are selected and combined according to the thickness, face and finish required for the order.

Edge cutting

Two edges, one true right angle

Before a piece is calibrated or polished, its edges have to be cut square to each other. This line takes both adjoining edges of a piece under a constant water spray, so the corner they meet at comes out a true right angle rather than whatever the rough block happened to give.

That squareness is what lets two pieces lay to a tight, even joint on site instead of a gap that widens as the row goes on. It is a small-looking step filmed up close, but it is the one that decides whether a floor's grout lines stay straight.

Table polish on the Kota line

The slab goes on the table and the head comes down onto it. From there it is the operator, not the machine, that decides the result — how long the head dwells, how hard it presses, where it goes back over. He is reading the face as it comes up and correcting as he goes.

That hand control is the whole reason this line exists. Table polish stops one grade short of a full mirror, at a satin sheen, and holding an even sheen across a face this size is not something a fixed pass does well. It is slower per slab than the diamond line, and it is the right line for work where the finish has to look consistent piece to piece.

Diamond polishing line, water-fed

The heads run the length of the slab under water that never stops. The water is not for show: it carries the cut-off material away and keeps both the head and the stone cool. A head allowed to run dry burns the face, and a burnt face does not polish out.

The grit steps down through the sequence — coarse first to take the saw marks off, then finer and finer until the surface stops scattering light and starts returning it. What comes off the end of the line is the mirror-class face you see stacked at the close of the clip.
