Raj Green, natural riven surface

One stone, two very different faces

Raj Green Stone

The finish changes this stone more than any other we sell. Sawn and sandblasted it is a pale cream-buff with a green cast; riven and wet it is the multi-tonal green-brown-grey that made it Britain's default patio stone.

The material

Not actually green

Raj Green is a commercial grade selected from the Rajasthan sandstone belt, and the first thing to say about it is that the surface changes the colour more than any other stone we sell. The photographs on this page are our own stock in sawn and sandblasted finish, dry — and it reads as a pale cream-buff with a soft greenish cast.

That surprises people who know Raj Green from British patios, where it is almost always laid riven and seen wet. On a riven face the split follows the bed and the mineral banding sits proud, so the greens, browns and greys read at full saturation. Saw through the same block and abrade the face and you cut across that banding: the tones average out and the whole thing lightens by several shades. Neither is more correct — it is one stone with two personalities, decided entirely by the finish you specify.

So: choose from a physical sample in the finish you are actually buying, wetted and dry. A riven sample will not tell you what a sandblasted floor looks like. Underneath, it behaves like the rest of the hard Rajasthan sandstones — silica-based, frost-stable, through-body colour that does not fade.

Laying it well

The one thing that decides whether Raj Green looks good.

More than any other stone we sell, Raj Green is made or ruined on site rather than at the quarry. It is worth spending five minutes on this before the mason starts.

01

Mix from every pallet

Open four or five pallets and draw from all of them as you lay. Working pallet by pallet produces visible bands of colour across the finished area — the single most common complaint about this stone, and entirely avoidable.

02

Dry-lay first

Set out a few square metres loose before bedding anything. Stand back, look at the tonal distribution, and move pieces around until no two strong greens or strong greys sit adjacent. Then bed it.

03

Sample the right finish

A riven sample will not tell you what a sawn or sandblasted floor looks like — the same block reads several shades apart between the two. Always sample in the finish you are actually buying, wetted and dry.
