Diamond-polished Mandana slab face

Mandana sandstone

Mandana stone diamond polish

Mandana sandstone run through our diamond polishing line — a flat, even, low-sheen face with the fine parallel tooling of the abrasive heads still visible in raking light.

Machine-polished on the diamond line

What diamond polishing actually does

Diamond polishing is a machine process, not a hand one. The slab passes under a line of rotating heads carrying progressively finer diamond abrasive segments, each pass taking the surface down a grade until the face is dead flat and evenly reflective. What you are looking at on this page is exactly that surface, photographed in our own yard — no rendering, no sample board.

The characteristic of the finish is the tooling. Look across a diamond-polished slab in raking light and you will see fine parallel lines from the head travel, and on wider slabs the faint arc of the head path. That is not a defect. It is the honest signature of the process, and specifiers who want it want it precisely because it reads as worked stone rather than as a printed tile.

Because Mandana is silica-based rather than calcareous, it takes this treatment differently to a limestone. The polish does not close the surface into a mirror the way polished Kota does; it lands at a soft satin that keeps a little grip and hides marks far better than a full gloss. In practice that makes it a much more forgiving floor than people expect from the word ‘polished’.

We hold it in two commercial forms — random slabs straight off the bed run, and 22″ × 22″ cut squares. The random slabs are the economical option and the one to specify when the layout can absorb varied lengths. The 22″ square is the format most clients ask for by name.

The faint arc across the face is the path of the polishing head. On a large slab it is always visible in raking light.

Two commercial forms

Random slabs, or 22″ × 22″ squares.

Both come off the same beds and take the same polish. The choice is about how much your layout can absorb varied lengths — and what you are willing to pay for the convenience of a fixed module.

RandomRandom bed-run Mandana slabs stacked in the yard

Random slabs

Straight off the bed run in whatever lengths the bed gives, sorted to consistent widths. Nothing is trimmed to a module, so nothing is wasted — which is why this is the most economical way to buy polished Mandana.

  • Best rate per square foot of any polished Mandana format.
  • Widths sorted to a consistent band; lengths vary by bed.
  • 20 – 40 mm typical supply thickness.
  • Suits broken-course and random-length layouts, verandas, large floors.

22″ × 22″ cut squares

559 × 559 mm, cut square and edge-trimmed. The format clients ask for by name, because it lays as a straightforward grid with no setting-out arithmetic and no cutting on site beyond the perimeter.

  • 3.36 sq ft per piece — about 30 pieces per 100 sq ft.
  • 18, 20, 25 and 30 mm thickness, calibrated on request.
  • Square and edge-trimmed for near-butt joints.
  • Suits grid layouts, rooms with a regular plan, showroom floors.

Where it works

Typical applications

  • Interior flooring, residential and commercial
  • Verandas, porches and covered courtyards
  • Wall cladding and dado
  • Staircase treads, risers and landings
  • Skirting, sills and copings
  • Temple and institutional floors
  • Table tops and counter surfaces
  • Showroom and reception floors

One honest caveat

A polished face is a polished face. Indoors and under cover it is excellent. On an open terrace that takes monsoon rain and full sun it will dull faster than a honed or riven surface, and it is more slippery wet. For exposed exterior areas specify natural riven or grooved instead — we would rather tell you now.

Ask for a polished piece before you commit.

The photographs on this page are our own stock, shot in daylight at the yard — but a screen still cannot show you a satin sheen. We will courier a polished sample.
