The short version
Kota and Tandur are both sedimentary limestones, both inexpensive compared with granite or marble, and both have been the default flooring choice in their home regions for decades — Kota across the north and west of India, Tandur across Hyderabad, Bengaluru and the rest of the south. The difference is not really about quality in the abstract; it's about which one your region can supply cheaply, and what finish you actually need.
Kota, quarried around Ramganjmandi in Rajasthan, calibrates and polishes more consistently and has the longer track record in demanding public buildings. Tandur, quarried near Tandur in Telangana, is typically the cheaper local option in the south but takes a softer polish and is more prone to surface wear over time.
Origin
Kota stone comes from the Kota district of Rajasthan, commercially quarried for well over a century and used in railway stations, courts and government buildings across India. Tandur stone is quarried around Tandur in the Rangareddy district of Telangana, roughly 100 km from Hyderabad, and has been the dominant flooring material across Hyderabad, Bengaluru and much of South India for decades — largely because it's the local stone and freight from Rajasthan adds real cost.

Where each one belongs
- Choose Kota if you want a higher, more consistent polish, better long-term surface durability, or you are anywhere north or west of the Deccan where Kota is the locally cheap option.
- Choose Tandur if you are in South India on a tight budget and freight from Rajasthan would erase the savings — Tandur has served that market well for decades and remains a sound, affordable choice for lighter-traffic areas.
- Think twice about Tandur for a high-traffic commercial floor or anywhere you want a genuine mirror polish — that's where Kota's better calibration and polish retention earn back the extra freight cost.
