Random bed-run Mandana slabs stacked in the yard

Mandana Sandstone

Red Mandana Stone

The stone Rajasthan is known for. A warm red sandstone quarried at Mandana barely thirty kilometres from our unit, supplied as random bed-run slabs and cut squares.

The Rajasthan red sandstone

About Red Mandana Stone

Red Mandana is a hard, close-grained sandstone — considerably denser than most Indian sandstones, which is why it survives outdoors in climates that shale-heavy stones do not. It comes off the bed with a subtle ripple and no two pieces are identical; laid as paving it gives you texture and grip without any machining at all.

The red is genuinely through-body, not a surface skin, so chips and saw cuts show the same colour. It is used on everything from haveli restoration and temple work to modern landscape paving, and it is the material of choice when a project wants that unmistakable Rajasthan palette.

We hold it as random bed-run slabs — the economical option, sorted by width and taken as they come off the bed — and as cut squares in 22″ × 22″. From there it goes honed, mirror polished or diamond polished depending on what the floor needs.

In the yard

Stacked on edge, sorted by tone.

Red Mandana varies more between beds than Kota does, so tone sorting is done by eye in the yard before anything is loaded. These are our own stacks at Amarpura.

  • Stacked on edge on battens, never flat in a pile — a Mandana edge chips more readily than a Kota one.
  • Sorted for tone before loading. The red runs from a light rose through to a deep oxide, and a floor wants to come off one part of that range.
  • Random slabs or cut squares. Random is the better rate; 22″ × 22″ lays as a straight grid.
