Kandla Grey Stone
The grey sandstone that made Indian paving a global product. Cool, even-toned and dense enough to survive frost, it is the most specified Indian stone in the UK and European paving market.

About Kandla Grey Stone
Kandla Grey is a commercial name, not a single quarry. It describes grey sandstone selected from the Rajasthan belt — Bundi, Bijolia and Bhilwara, adjacent to our own operation. The name comes from Kandla Port in Gujarat, where the stone was historically shipped to Europe, and it stuck.
What defines it commercially is consistency — a predictable even tone rather than the movement you get in a riven red sandstone. That is a sorting discipline as much as a geological one: the beds run from off-white through pale silver to deeper grey, so a uniform pallet means selecting for tone at the yard, not just at the face.
Our photographs here are dry and unsealed, which is how it looks in the yard and on a dry day. Wetted or sealed it darkens to a definite mid grey — worth knowing before you choose, because a sealed patio is a good deal darker than the sample you handled in the sun.
It is hard and quartz-bearing, 1,100–1,600 kg/cm², absorption low enough to be frost-stable — which is why it survives Northern European winters. Patios, driveways, courtyards, pool surrounds and cladding. Because the grey is genuinely neutral it takes on the scheme around it: warm against timber and planting, cool against white render and steel.
